1. What first sparked your interest in nursing? Was there a specific moment, class, or person that inspired you?
I’ve always been interested in finding a career that genuinely helps others, but the idea of going into healthcare didn’t really take shape until I started researching careers during my sophomore year. I initially considered the pre-med track, but I realized I was more drawn to the hands-on patient care that nursing provides, rather than focusing only on diagnosing and treating illnesses. I have close family members who have struggled, and some who are still fighting serious health battles. Realizing that I could be part of a team that helps heal and improve the quality of life for people in similar situations means so much to me.
2. What has been the most rewarding or exciting part of studying health?
The most rewarding part of studying healthcare is realizing that everything you learn applies to real people in real situations. At West, Mrs. Bryce’s anatomy class was one of my favorites, especially our cat dissection. It was fascinating to see how all the parts of the body work together to keep us healthy and strong, whether in a tiny cat or a much larger human. Learning things like that makes me feel more prepared and confident to help others when it really matters.
3. What do you hope to do with your degree in the future? What kind of impact do you want to make?
After I earn my BSN from Montclair State University, I hope to gain nursing experience working bedside in a hospital and then become a pediatric travel nurse. I’ve always loved the idea of traveling the world, and one of the great things about nursing is that there are numerous specialties to explore. Being sick can be scary, especially for children, and my main goal is to be a source of comfort and safety for them in those difficult moments.
4. What advice would you give to someone just starting their college application?
Even though the college application process can feel overwhelming, try not to stress. Your goals may change over time. The school you once dreamed of attending may not be where you end up, or you may be unsure about your major. That is completely okay. As long as you stay true to yourself in your essays and keep up with your deadlines, you will do great, and everything will work out.
